Blog Title

I chose this title for my blog for a couple of reasons. In literal terms, the prairie and the city have been where I have lived. In metaphorical terms, it indicates the span and nature of my interests.

I grew up on a farm in the Great Plains, went to three universities and got two degrees: history and theater. I have lived for greater or briefer times in five cities of various sizes from Manhattan, Kansas to Manhattan, New York. My wife and I lived in the Twin Cities for 28 years and that is where our son was born and raised.
But you can't take the country out of the boy, and that is where my heart is.

Nothing Ventured Nothing Gained

This is my initial plunge into self blogging. I hope to put up here ruminations on just about anything.

I've been a teacher, but a teacher should be open to learning as well. It is in the interchange of thoughts, views, knowledge and experience(s) that each of us grows from beginning to end (if any.)

I will attempt to be civil and caring, not only in what I write, but in how I respond to any who post here. That does not mean I will rule out satire. I love to laugh and I think I have a modicum of wit, but I don't like personal ridicule. I hope any who post here will be civil as well. Ideas are fair game. People are not. I dislike flaming very much. If that's what you get off on, please go elsewhere.

I am opinionated. I think most, if not all, of us are. I will be straight. I know something, more or less, in a lot of areas. What I know about myself is that I am not a genius, just a very curious person who is rapidly approaching 3 score and 10 who loves diversity and who marvels at the experience of it.

I will post on any subject; from comic books to cosmology, from mysticism to music to mastodons, from alpha to omega, from prairie grass to high rises.
